Senior citizens wait wearily for temples, shrines to open

The COVID-19 pandemic has not spared religion, resulting in cancellation of prayer and worship services of various faiths, religious festivals and pilgrimages for over the last three months in Nepal. All the religious shrines like monasteries, mosques, churches and temples have remained closed as soon as the government enforced the nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Share Market to reopen from today

The share market will reopen from Monday, June 29. A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) on Sunday decided to direct the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) to open the market from Monday. The SEBON has asked the stakeholders to resort to electronic medium for share and money transfer. “Investors, brokers, NEPSE, CDS and clearing and merchant banks should follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines published earlier,” said the capital market regulator.

Over 50% paddy plantation complete in Sudurpaschim, Karnali states

More than half of all paddy plantation of the season has been completed in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, the food basket of Sudurpaschim State. According to Agriculture Knowledge Centre of Kanchanpur, paddy plantation in 50.23 per cent of paddy fields (59,639 hectare) of the two districts has been completed so far. Information officer of the centre, Haridatta Joshi, said that the proportion of paddy plantation this year was more as compared to the same period of last year.

Private school teachers across the country remain unpaid

Over 200,000 teachers and employees associated with private schools across the county have not received their salaries for the last three months. They are not likely to get paid for longer as it may take more time for the schools to resume their operation. Worse, some schools have already started laying off their teachers and employees. Schools said they were not paying teachers as they were unable to collect fees from guardians as the government asked them not to take any fees from the guardians...

COVID-19 national tally reaches 12,772 with 463 new cases today

The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has confirmed 463 new cases of COVID-19 today. With this, national COVID-19 tally has reached 12,772.

NC office-bearers meet to discuss party general convention schedule   

A meeting of the office-bearers of Nepali Congress today is to discuss the party's 14th General Convention schedule affected by the COVID-19 crisis. According to party office chief secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel, the meeting to take place at the party central office, Sanepa will discuss the general convention schedule ahead.    

158 Nepalis die from coronavirus abroad

A total of 158 Nepalis have lost their lives from coronavirus in different parts of the world so far while 26,227 Nepalis have been found infected.

COVID-19: 29 new cases in State 2  

Altogether 29 new cases of Corona Virus have been confirmed in State no. 2 in past 24 hours. The new cases were detected in Dhanusa, Mahottari and Parsa districts.    

Crimes galore in the time of coronavirus lockdown

Believe it or not, over 5,000 crimes including 1,482 cases of suicide were registered in the 83 days of lockdown, from March 24 to June 14. In lockdown, people had to stay indoors unless in emergency, and committing crime never falls in the category of emergency. But it was not so in Nepal. At least the criminals continued their businesses; the police records testified this.

Locusts invade five Terai districts

Locusts, short-horned grasshoppers, have entered Nepal Saturday morning creating widespread fear among the public about crop damage and its consequences on food security. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has confirmed that swarms of locusts had entered Nepal from India today morning, said Dr. Hari Bahadur KC, spokesman at the ministry. However, there was no confirmation about the mass of locusts that entered the country.

8-month pregnant having intestinal surgery beats COVID-19

The eight-month pregnant was airlifted to Nepalgunj Medical College, Kohalpur after her stomach started to swell on June 8, where she was also identified with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The surgery was performed on the same day.

Ten more PCR labs in the offing   

The Ministry of Health and Population is to establish 10 more laboratories in order to carry out test for Corona Virus through the Polymerase Chain Reaction method. The labs will be established in 10 different locations as an effort to expand the scope of COVID-19 tests, said coordinator of the Ministry's Incident Command System Dr Gunaraj Lohani.
