Pashupatinagar, Dec. 25: Yuvantika Tamang of Suryodaya Municipality–10, Ilam, is all set to climb Mount Everest. Tamang, 28, will climb the world’s highest peak in April.
Tamang, who is preparing to scale Everest with the Elite Himalayan Exped Trek, has previously climbed the 6,119-metre Lobuche peak. She has also been riding bikes.
Tamang, the only daughter of her parents Prakash and Madhu Tamang, requires Rs. 5 million to climb the highest peak. So, she is currently raising funds with the help of the local women’s forums. She has approached all 10 local levels of the district as well as other social organisations.
Ilam's Suryodaya and Ilam municipalities have agreed to provide Rs. 200,000 each. Durga Devi Bhattarai, Deputy Mayor of Suryodaya Municipality, said that the municipality would provide further assistance to Tamang if needed.
Local youths have also started a campaign to help her raise funds. Yuvaraj Pradhan, youth activist from Suryodaya–10, said that Tamang, if successful, would become the first woman from the district to reach the top of Mount Everest and called her the pride of Ilam.
According to Tamang’s family, she can invest Rs 1.5 million herself if she raises Rs 3.5 million from other sources.
