By Abinash Chaudhary, Dhangadhi, Feb. 15: Cameras are being installed to locate the man-eater tiger that has attacked people in Kailali.
According to the Division Forest Office, Kailali, cameras are to be placed today on those areas where the movement of the tiger is observed so as to ensnare the cannibal tiger.
"First of all, it is necessary to ensure the location of the tiger in order to take it under control. Here, the darting method is the most useful to trap the tiger by making it unconscious", said Ram Chandra Kandel, chief of division forest office, adding that the work to install cameras at 3-4 places today is underway.
An adult Bengal tiger that has become a man-eater has been roaming around the community forests in Gauriganga Municipality and Kailari Rural Municipality.
The Tiger moves along Dudhiya, Udashipur, Badhaipur, Rajipur, and Andaiya areas, and the route the tiger moves along falls under the Basanta Biosphere Route.
The Tiger killed Kala Dhami, aged 25, from Gauriganga Municipality-5 Addiya, on Sunday afternoon. She had gone to Pushpanjali community forest to gather green forage. Her body was recovered some distance away from the place she was attacked by the tiger.
Likewise, Durga Prasad Chaudhary, 28, was attacked on Friday at Sitakuwa community forest located at Kailari Rural Municipality-7. Chaudhary, who had gone to pick Sal leaves for marriage, has sustained injuries in a scuffle with a tiger. He was injured in the back and head and is receiving treatment in Nepalgunj.
Locals are petrified with the incidents of attacks and death from the tiger. The Bengal tiger even moves through the east-west highway which has troubled locals in commuting and security forces have been mobilised for safety.
Even the administration is taking the matter seriously.
Hiral Lal Chaudhary, Assistant Chief District Officer (CDO), said that it has a provision to either shoot the tiger or to take it under control by darting after a tiger becomes man-eater.
"If the tiger is causing further damage, there is a legal provision that it can be shot after analyzing the situation," he said. At the local level, voices have been raised that tigers should be killed, he added.
CDO Kandel said that the process to take the Bengal tiger in control by darting is underway.
"I have had discussions with the department and Bardiya National Park," he said.
"However, there is no veteran doctor at the moment in Bardiya," said Kandel, adding that there is no darting technician in Bardiya National Park at the moment, so we have to invite the technician from outside to solve the problem.
It is yet to be ascertained that the tiger which has been attacking the locals since Friday came from Bardiya National Park, Shuklaphanta National Park, or from Dudhuwa National Park of India.
It is possible that there is no GPS tracking on the cannibal Bengal tiger.
However, it is not proved about the exact location and origin of the tiger but it is believed that the tiger entered the forest from the northern belt of the community forest, said CDO Kandel.
If there was GPS tracking on the tiger then it would be easy to track the tiger, he said. However, it has not been confirmed if the GPS has been placed on the tiger.
He added that there is no other alternative than to raise awareness in public and to find the location of the tiger at the earliest.
He said that they will spread awareness to stop further tiger induced severity and fatalities. "Wild animals should not be teased otherwise they become aggressive and attack people".
