Kathmandu, Sept. 26: A foundation stone was laid to install a rainwater harvesting system and ground water recharge system at Nandi Ratri School, Naxal on Saturday.
Amid a function, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Bidhya Sundar Shakya laid the foundation stone.
The rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge system is being installed at the school as part of a water replenishing tool to help the students of the school get rid of water shortage and ensure sufficient water supply in the locality.
The system is being installed with the help of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).
Speaking at the programme, Shakya said the water recharge system would increase the groundwater level.
The metropolis came up with the rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge campaign to meet the water demand through the traditional sources like stone spouts, well and groundwater, he said.
KMC Ward No. 1 Chairman Bharat Lal Shrestha hoped that once the water recharge system was installed, stone spouts in the surrounding area would increase gradually. On the occasion, Chief of the environment division of KMC Hari Kumar Shrestha said the city office had a plan to install a similar system on the premises of the ward office of KMC-5.
Mentioning that he had also installed the system in his house, Shrestha said the rainwater was safe for use.
Similarly, Tulasi Amatya, chairperson of the school management committee, said that the system would enhance the dignity of the school. Nisha Koirala, environment engineer of KMC, said rainwater would be collected in an underground tank with a capacity of 41,760 liters, after using a proper filter to clean the water.
Informing about the water recharge system, she said, "Water overflowed from the underground tank will fall on the ground through a 48-inch recharge pit, filled with boulders, gravel and coarse sand. This will absorb runoff water and help in recharging underground water.” The system is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 1.12 million.
