Rukum, Mar. 21: Every year during monsoon, the Simrutu River gets flooded and inundates the areas in Ward No. 2 of Triveni Rural Municipality, Rukum district.
The flooded river also puts Triveni Secondary School at risk as it lies near the river.

Flooded Simrutu River reaches the ground of the school during the monsoon, disrupting regular classes. The walls surrounding the school are in dilapidated conditions.
Students are also at risk of drowning due to the swollen river in the rainy season.

In a bid to prevent the school and students from possible damage in the upcoming monsoon, the local level has started constructing an embankment near the school.
“The embankment will ensure that the school and students remain safe. It is being constructed on one side of the river near the school under a budget of Rs. 1 million from the Water Supply, Irrigation and Energy Development Office of the district,” said Shobharam Bohora, Ward No. 2 chairman.

Bohora informed that the construction was expected to be completed before mid-July.
“The scenario around the school during monsoon is unpleasant. An embankment is necessity to save the school from floods,” said Dilli Bahadur Malla, the school’s principal.
Established in the early 1980s, the school has been running classes up to grade 12 with technical education courses as well. There are now 1,060 students in the school.

Meanwhile, Simrutu Bazaar, the major commercial centre of Triveni, is also at risk of inundation during monsoon.
The water from the Simrutu River and the Muru River floods the Bazaar during rainy season.

“Last year, a flood in the Muru River brought fallen trees and blocked its course. It then entered Simrutu Bazaar and caused damages worth millions of rupees,” said Nar Bahadur Oli, a local.
Locals have blamed the rampant construction around river banks for narrowing river course as a major cause for damages during monsoon.
