Kathmandu, Jan. 20: Ageing Nepal, an organisation of Nepal involved in UNESCO's campaign to make senior citizens literate, has received the King Sejong Literacy Award. The oraganisation has received an award of USD 20,000. The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize is an annual prize awarded to two institutions, or individuals across the world for their contribution to the fight against illiteracy.
The award for the year 2020 has also been received by the World School of the United Kingdom.
The award is funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea which first offered the Prize in 1989, honouring the outstanding contribution made to literacy by Sejong the Great who created the Korean alphabet Hangul.
At a function organized at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha handed over the King Sejong UNESCO Award to Ageing Nepal President Krishna Murari Gautam (Chatyang Master).
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Shrestha said that it is a matter of pride for a Nepali organisation and Nepal itself to receive such a valued prize. He said that the contribution made by Aging is important to help in the education of senior citizens.
Minister Shrestha said that the ministry should make additional plans for the education of senior citizens.
Chairman of the award-winning organization Gautam said that the organisation was successful in getting the world-famous award due to the tireless work of the team.
A total of 76 organisations from across the world were recommended for the award. The award was established in 1989.
