Kathmandu, Oct. 5: The news reports that the national census of 2021 will be counting transgender people appear inaccurate, stated Trans Rights Collective (TRC).
No question or topic seeming to account for transgender individuals could be found in the census questionnaire published in the Nepal Gazette on August 3, TRC said.
The Collective, which is a loose network of young trans men and women, further said that trans women and men would include themselves under the categories of ‘women’ and ‘men’ respectively in next year’s census, as they have always done in the past. “We, transgender women and men, fall under the categories of women and men; we identify and introduce ourselves as such. We don’t consider transgender women and men as ‘others’ or as different from women and men,” it said in a statement.
TRC also explained that the census of transgender people was a sensitive issue in the socio-cultural context of Nepal. It requires a different methodology and various aspects such as sensitivity, suitability, individual and collective security and privacy need to be carefully discussed and studied.
