Kathmandu, Oct 16: Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel on Wednesday warned of protests if his party does not get one of the posts of Speaker or Deputy Speaker.
To support his argument for the key posts, he cited the constitution and parliamentary practice stating that a single political party is not entitled to both the portfolios, and opposition party shall get one of them.
"We will not accept any decision in this regard flouting the constitutional system. We will launch a protest both in parliament and in the streets. NC lawmakers in parliament should launch a protest in case of defying the system," he said while talking to media-persons at a tea reception organised here on Wednesday by ruling Nepal Community Party on the occasion of Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals.
The coveted post of Speaker is vacant after former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned after being charged with attempting to rape a woman employee of the parliament secretariat.
