Over 200 houses inundated due to floods in Saptakoshi, Khando rivers

By Dhirendra Prasad Sah, Rajbiraj, July 20: Floods in the rivers including the Saptakoshi, Khando, Balan, Mahuli, Jita due to the incessant rainfall for the last two days have left over two hundred houses in Saptari waterlogged.

Swollen Khando river flooded 50 houses of Belhi, ward no. 1 of Koiladi Rural Municipality, and 100 houses of Koiladi and Barjhulla, ward no. 4 and 5 of the same rural municipality, according to Rajesh Kumar Jha, disaster management officer at the Koiladi Rural Municipality.

A situation of displacement had nearly emerged when the flood entered the settlement and water level in the Khando river crossed the danger mark. However, now that the flood level has come down, the situation has improved. If water level rises again in the Khando, people in that settlement should be evacuated to a safer, higher location, he said.

Satis Kumar Singha, Chair of Koiladi Rural Municipality, said flood had started erosion of the spurs of the embankment of the river at Sakarpura, ward No. 3. Now, erosion has lessened with the fall in the water level, he said. "Floods have damaged roads in three to four points including Banarjhulla and Koiladi".

Similarly, over 50 households in Hanuman Nagar Kankalini Municipality lying nearby the eastern embankment of the Saptakoshi River have been inundated by the flood of the Saptakoshi.

Ward no. 2, 5 and 6 of Rajbiraj Municipality have also been submerged after the rainwater got waterlogged there.

Likewise, over 75 families have been displaced after the floods of the Saptakoshi River gushed into the human settlement at Gobagadha, known as island of the district, ward no. 13 of Hanuman Nagar Kankalini Municipality.

Bindesor Yadav, Chair of the ward 13, said the police had rescued the families and taken to the Rastriya Aadharbhut Primary School, located at a higher elevation.
