TU to limit participation in convocation

By A Staff Reporter
Kathmandu, Dec. 8: Tribhuvan University has decided to conduct this year’s convocation ceremony only in presence of limited number of students where PhD, MPhil and only gold medallists of all levels can appear physically.
With this decision of the TU, 7,087 students who applied to participate in the convocation can’t attend the function physically. The TU has decided to cancel the mass function of convocation amidst the fear of coronavirus.
The varsity has planned to telecast the ceremony live from Nepal Television and requested all graduates to watch the function on television, Puspa Raj Joshi, controller at the Office of the Controller of the Examination, TU, said.
This year, over 7,000 graduates had applied to appear in the 46th convocation programme that is going to be held on December 21. Each student had paid up to Rs. 4,000 for the participation.
Controller Joshi said interested graduates can receive the gown from the varsity while it has decided to refund the charge for others who are not interested to receive the service.
After the TU decided to conduct the convocation only in limited participation, graduates who filled the form to participate in the function have expressed their dissatisfaction over the late decision of the university.
Students said that they paid thousands for the convocation, but allowing only gold medallists to participate is injustice to them.
Usha Magar, a new graduate of TU, said the TU played with the feelings of students which reflects that the education system is shameful and repulsive. She raised a question, “Why didn't TU think this before it published such a notice?”
Likewise, Jasmine Bajracharya, another new graduate of the TU, said, “This is once in a lifetime opportunity for every graduate. Giving us expectations when there were none, the institute has made a joke of our expectations. This is a big slap to all those students who believe in the value of their education.”
Last year, a total of 10,384 graduates had participated in the convocation.
