By Narayan Adhikari, Chitwan, June 1: Farmers are suffering as the supply of vegetable has been disrupted due to the prohibitory order enforced in different places of the country including the capital city, Kathmandu, to check spread of the novel coronavirus infection.
The supply disruption has spoiled the vegetable in the field.
According to the secretary of Federation of District Vegetable and Fruits Producer Cooperative, Chitwan, Ramchandra Regmi, bitter gourd is hardly selling at Rs. 5 a kg which was being sold at Rs 120 a kg a month earlier. Price of bean has fallen to Rs 10 a kg while its price was Rs 120. Similarly, the price has been continually declining.
The wastage of vegetable is more than two to three ton per day in Narayangarh. Sushil Gurung of the Mamavanja Krishi farm of Bharatpur Municipality said that wastage cross over 1 ton to 1.5 ton a day.
He said that price has been declined by 50 percent.
Subhadra Subedi of Subedi Agriculture Farm, Khadrawli, said that farmer don’t have alternative of the losses.
There is no storage facility for vegetable. West Chitwan is the main pocket area for vegetable. The vegetable used to supply to Kathmandu, Pokhara and Butwal.
Head of Agriculture Knowledge Center, Bharatapur, Rajan Dhakal, believes that the situation will be sequentially improved. He said that prohibition has disrupted that collection of vegetable.
The vegetable traders used to collect vegetable from Dhangadi, Britamod and Hetauda.
Shutdown of hotels, restaurants, has sharply declined the consumption of vegetable. (RSS)
