Lamjung, July 17: Number of safe abortions has been increasing in Lamjung district over the past three years.
In the fiscal year 2020/2021, altogether 206 women received safe abortion services from different health institutions of the district.
According to the Lamjung Health Office, abortion services are sought from recognised health institutions.
According to Amar Dawadi, chief of the office, more women have started visiting the health institutions for safe abortions as they have become aware about the risk of unsafe abortion.
Thirty one women aged below 20 years received the safe abortion services in 2020. A total of 175 women aged above 20 years have benefited from the service in the year.
According to Shusil Poudel, information officer at the office, 144 women had received abortion services in fiscal year 2019/2020. Of them, 12 were aged below 20 years.
Similarly, 130 women received the service in the fiscal year 2018/2019. Eight of them were aged below 20 years.
Health workers said that more women started receiving the service after they generated awareness about safe abortion and the health institutions providing the services. “Those who previously had unsafe abortions are also visiting the listed health facilities seeking abortion service,” they said.
Most of the women receiving abortion services are from Beshisahar, Madhya Nepal and Rainas municipalities.
Institutions and health workers should be listed to carry out the services. Thirteen health institutions have been listed to provide abortion services in Lamjung with seven equipped with the service providers.
Abortion services are being provided from District Hospital Lamjung in Bensishahar, Lamjung Model Hospital, Chisanku Health Post in Madhya Nepal, Ramgha Health Post, Dhamilikuwa Health Post, Sunderbazaar Hospital in Rainas and Baglungpani Health Post in Kwalasothar.
