Mass suicide in Karnali River: Funeral of four performed, one still missing



By Our Correspondent, Dailekh, Mar.  11: Four out of five members of the same family of Aathbish Municipality-3 of Dailekh district who ended their lives jumping into the Karnali River have been cremated en-masse on the bank of the river.

Suki Baduwal, wife of Man Singh Baduwal, a resident of Nimayal in Athabish Municipality, had jumped into Karnali River on Sunday night with her three daughters and a son. One youngest daughter of Suki is still missing in the river. 

According to the locals, Suki may have gone to Karnali with her four children as her husband, Man Singh, used to drink alcohol and fight in the family.

The other deceased have been identified as Sarita Baduwal, 13, Suki’s daughter, Kalpana Baduwal, 15, and son Lalit Baduwal, 10.

Chief of the Dailekh Police Office, Anupam Shrestha, said that the bodies of four of the victims have been found in Karnali so far. He informed that search was on for Baduwal's youngest daughter Rajani Baduwal, 7.

According to the police, Suki Baduwal was cremated as per Hindu tradition while the three children were buried.

Hari Bahadur Shahi, brother of the deceased Suki, said that there was a problem in conducting the funeral due to a delay in the post-mortem.

Hari Bahadur said that the bodies were brought from Mangalsen of Achham district in a tipper with the help of the Municipality at 2:00 a.m. and cremated at Jhula funeral site of Aathbish Municipality.
