Kathmandu, Dec. 20: The living gods of Kathmandu -- Ganesh and Bhairav -- have been changed.
The head priest of Taleju Bhawani Uddhav Karmacharya established four-and-a-half-year-old Rodin Shakya as the new Ganesh and three-and-a-half-year-old Karshanav Shakya as the new Bhairav on Friday and Saturday respectively. Rodin is from Naradevi while Karshanav is from Jaisidewal.
The current gods -- Ganesh Samveg Shakya and Bhairav Rujan Shakya -- are retiring after reaching the age of 14. They will still be worshipped for a further two and three days respectively. But after that, they will return to normal life.
According to the custom, children are eligible to be selected as lords Ganesh and Bhairav only if they are a member of one of the families associated with the 18 Shakya Mahabihars of Kathmandu.
