Kathmandu, Nov.20: The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperative and Poverty Alleviation is preparing a vision paper for the promotion of cooperative sector in the country. Admitting that cooperatives play a key role in the development of the economy, the ministry has taken the initiative.

Minister Shashi Shrestha said that the vision paper could aid in the prosperity of the country. Inaugurating the 30th annual general meeting of Nepal Saving and Credit Cooperative Association in Kathmandu on Friday, the Minister said that cooperative was the base for the prosperous Nepal.
Stating that cooperative sector needed to be more disciplined and trustworthy, Minister Shrestha said that she was ready to work with the professionals of the sector. “Development goals cannot be achieved until and unless we promote the cooperative sector,” she added.

According to the Minister, the sector is the strongest pillar of Nepali economy. “Cooperatives have crucial roles to play in social empowerment and poverty alleviation,” she said, adding that people had a trust in such organisations.
Minister Shrestha stressed on strengthening national economy through skill enhancement, capital formation, technology transfer and job creation and said cooperatives can do these jobs in better ways.
“Collective efforts are essential for development of entrepreneurship culture, and this sector can convince people to run their own businesses,” she said. The Minister added that the economy would improve if we were able to improve cooperatives in the country.
