14 dead, 23 missing as rains wreak havoc

Kathmandu, Oct. 20: The torrential post-monsoon rains that started from Saturday night have caused massive damages across the country, killing at least 14 and displacing dozens others.
At least 13 people have died after the heavy post-monsoon rains triggered landslides and floods in Sudurpaschim Province and one in Karnali Province on Tuesday.
According to Prakash Bikram Shah of Sudurpaschim Bureau of Gorkhapatra, the torrential rainfall since Sunday morning has wreaked havoc in all nine districts of Sudurpaschim Province, killing 13 persons.

Eight of them were killed in Doti, three in Baitadi and two in Dadeldhura. Two minors were killed after the house of Bir Bahadur Kunjeda of Sayel Rural Municipality-6, Doti, was buried by landslide on Tuesday morning, said Chief District Officer Shankar Bisht. The deceased have been identified as Sagar Kunjeda, 14, and Aashish Kunjeda, 11.
Similarly, three people of the family sustained injuries in the incident.

Likewise, four of the same family of Jorayal Rural Municipality died when a landslide buried their houses. The deceased were identified as Sher Bahadur BK, 42, Mohan BK, 18, Rabin BK 16 and Pabitra BK, 16. Likewise, Mandhara Balayar, 35, of Shikhar Municipality-11 and Jogi Sarki, 63, of Jorayal-3 were killed in separate landslides.
The two dead in Dadeldhura were from Ganyapdhura Rural Municipality. Bishnu Prasad Awasthai, 32, of Ganyapdhura-1 was buried to death while 65-year-old Narmada Devi Shahi of Ward-3 was swept away by a river.

Likewise, three were killed when a house was swept away by a landslide in Shivanath Rural Municipality in Baitadi.
Likewise, a girl died after a house collapsed in Kalikot in Karnali following torrential rainfall on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Smirti Adhikari of Mahawai Rural Municipality-7.
According to the District Police Office, Kalikot, the victim’s sister Anisha Adhikari, 15, also sustained injuries in the incident.
Chief of the Kalikot District Police Office, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chakra Shah said that a rescue team led by Nepal Police and Armed Police Forces was on its way to the spot carrying relief materials, including tarpaulins.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology Dadeldhura, Kailali and Doti Dipayal recorded 220 mm, 187.5 mm and 140 mm rainfall respectively in the last 24 hours. Rainfall between 25-50 mm is considered moderate; 50-100 is heavy and above 100 is considered very heavy.
Communication service has been disrupted in seven hilly districts of the province, including Dadeldhura, Doti, Achham, Bajura, Bajhang, Baitadi and Darchula. Electricity in the hilly district has been disrupted after a pine tree fell on the 132 kV transmission line of Nepal Electricity Authority at Khanidanda in Kailali.
The swollen Mahakali River has inundated several settlements in Bhimdutta and Dodarachadani and damaged roads built along the Mahakali River.
Meanwhile, Provincial Government of Sudurpaschim has decided to immediately allocate Rs. 250 million to distribute as compensation to the families which lost family members and the farmers whose paddy was destroyed.

A Cabinet meeting of the Province Government on Tuesday decided to allocate the budget, according to Prakash Bikram Shah of Sudurpaschim Bureau.
The rain-triggered floods in several rivers and landslides have blocked several highways in the middle of Dashain festival.
The Mahakali River has swelled to highest level in 92 years. The water level was measured at 547,224 cusec on Tuesday. Earlier in 2013, the water level had reached 544,476 cusec.
Farmers were hit hard as the rains damaged both standing and harvested paddy crops in several parts of the country. Moreover, flood in Jumla district swept away paddy field with ripe Marsi rice. Dashain revelers and others have been stranded as roads got blocked while flights in mountains were affected by rains.

Flood-stranded people rescued from Rapti River
According to our Banke correspondent Siraj Khan, security personnel rescued four persons stranded in Rapti River on Tuesday.
Folks of Daduwa Rural Municipality-4 had gone to the middle part of the river to collect forest bitter gourd. They had been stranded on the elevated river bed on Monday afternoon after the river flooded all of a sudden.

A team of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel had reached the site after getting information about stranded people in the flood river, said Rupan Gyawali, Information Management Officer at the District Emergency Operations Centre, Banke.
The team rescued Sokhat Nau, 55, Sabbir Khan, 45, Pramod Lonia, 30, and Nazir Khan, 60, of Duduwa Rural Municipality-4.
The water level in the Rapti River has been rising due to incessant rains for the last two days. The water level has reached 3 meters 40 centimeters.
Chief District Officer of Banke, Surya Bahadur Khatri, said that the residents of the riparian areas of the Rapti River have been urged to remain vigilant and asked not to go near the river as the water level was rising.

Ferry swept away
The flood in Karnali River trigged by heavy rainfall since Saturday night has caused severe damage in Kalikot district. The flood swept away a ferry operated in Jitey Bazar.
The ferry was the only means of transportation for the people of Bajura, Humla, Mugu and five local levels of Kalikot district and was the means to transport of goods for the construction of the corridor.

Kamal Malla, a local, said the swollen river had also swept away five toilets of Jitey bazar. If the water level in Karnali River continues to rise, the whole area of Jitey bazar would be inundated, he added.
Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Acharya said that the traders of Jiety bazar were told to go to safer place. The administration had also mobilised police and Nepal Army personnel.
The Karnali Corridor has been completely blocked due to floods caused by the landslide.
Siku village of Pachaljharna Rural Municipality-1 is at the risk of flood.

Pawan Shahi, a local, said three houses in Sikugaun-7 have already collapsed while other settlements are at high risk.
Similarly, four houses of Manma, the district headquarters of Kalikot, have collapsed due to incessant rainfall. Two houses in the main market have been collapsed by the rainfall and two are buried in the landslide that occurred in Nawagaira.
Mayor of Khandachakra Municipality Jasi Prasad Pandey said that there was no human casualty as the incident occurred in the afternoon.
Snowfall in Mustang

Meanwhile, it has snowed on the high hills of Mustang district in the trans-Himalayan region due to incessant rains for the last two days.
According to Chief District Officer of Mustang, Srinath Poudel, there is a problem in direct traffic on the Marfa River in Gharapjhong Rural Municipality of Mustang and Kavre Bhir area on the border of Myagdi and Mustang.
