Kathmandu, May 10: Ward 15 of Chandragiri Municipality has taken an initiative to provide job to daily wage earners who are facing difficulties in affording meals due to the lockdown.
Issuing a notice on Friday, the ward decided to provide paying job for an individual of a family facing hardship for daily meal.
According to the ward, providing job to an individual of a family would help them afford food and there would be less crowd of people leading to less risk of infection.
“Many people have been gathering for free food being provided by different organizations and increasing the risk of COVID-19. Through the job, a family can afford necessary groceries; it is better than waiting for relief,” Uttam Bahadur Raut, ward chairman of Ward 15, told TRN daily by phone.
As per the notice of the ward regarding the initiation, the job would also enhance their self-esteem. Similarly, the job will be provided to both – temporary and permanent – residents in the area.
The ward will be providing work related to construction for the willing individuals.
“We have projects related to construction of park, expansion of roads and construction work in temple, among others. Many of our projects had been stalled due to the lockdown and we are planning to resume them so those in difficulties can get a job in such hard times,” said Madhav Kumar KC, ward member of Ward 15.
Each individual is said to be provided work for five out of 15 days. A labour is said to be provided Rs 750 per day and a mistri will be provided Rs 1000 per day.
After 15 days, the ward will decide over the way of continuing the initiative by analysing the outcomes.
The ward is starting the initiative on Sunday through a cleanliness campaign in the area.
“We will begin the initiative from Sunday with cleanliness campaign. Then after, we will send individuals to work as per their capability,” said Raut.
The ward will also be focusing on safety of workers and mitigating the risk of transmission of COVID-19.
“The individuals will be provided with masks and gloves. They will have facility of washing hands and will do work by maintaining social distance,” said Raut.
The ward’s initiative was also highly appreciated by people on social media such as Twitter and Facebook.
