Behind the ever-sparkling and glamorous lives of celebrities remains a life that is completely hidden from us.
But we, as fans, tend to forget it. Through our frequent exposures to their social media accounts and lives, we do feel that they are highly impressive.
We tend to ignore their shortcomings while concentrating only on their positive aspects. An irony is that this type of behaviour on our part helps certain celebrities gain greater confidence to get indulged in bad activities. Thankfully, they don’t get a clean chit after this, all the time.
Recent news headlines about Kris Wu, a 30-year-old Canadian national with Chinese origin, are circulating everywhere. He was one of the most popular celebrities in China and a brand ambassador to multiple high-end brands. Wu’s journey as a celebrity began with debut in a K-pop idol group EXO. But he left the group in 2014 to focus on a successful career in China.
But all this popularity died down in a second when he got embroiled in a big scandal.
Wu’s former girlfriend Du Meizhu, a 19-year-old student, had spoken about him on Weibo, a popular Chinese social platform.
She had accused him of date rape and preying on underage girls. Though he has continued to deny these wrongdoings, more than 30 women have spoken about similar experiences of being sexually exploited by him.
Millions of fans are in shock with this latest development. They are divided in their opinions. While many have demanded strict punishments against him, there still are a good number of people supporting him.
Based on the information published on Weibo, the Chinese police began its investigation into Wu. Currently, the police administration has detained him on allegations of rape.
Hei Weibo account is nowhere to be found and so are his multiple songs. He has been called a bad influence for the young generation.
When we hear about scandals like that of Kris Wu, we come to know that not everything concerning celebrities is rosy.
However, there are many people who are emotionally and mentally invested and obsessed about them. They are not ready to believe that the person they idolise may have an entirely negative character, more villainous and screwed than movie characters.
There might be another Kris Wu who may be making use of his or her popularity to exploit other individuals.
This is a disgusting reality of our society. Liking and worshipping them is a different matter. Celebrities should be appreciated for their talents but getting extremely attached to them and feeling betrayed after a scandal breaks out is worse.
We should not forget that celebrities are not perfect and flawless as they seem to be. They are human beings, too. They should not be expected to act like gods.
Likewise, the obsessive fan culture has caused distress and it is particularly high among young teenagers.
The wrongdoings of the so-called influential people should be brought to light in order to create a fair and just society. Thorough investigations and stern punishments such persons can alert other celebrities against doing anything out of line.
It will help celebrities to uphold their good moral character. Celebrities should be a true role model for us, not someone who brings and further aggravates issues in our society!
