Kathmandu, Feb. 11: The government has decided to grant a public holiday on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar festival which falls on February 12 this year.
The government had cut off the public holiday on Lhosar festival three years ago.
The public holiday had been given since 1994 on Lhosar festival which is celebrated by Tamang and Hyolmo communities of the Himalayan region.
A Cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to resume the public holiday at the request of Nepal Tamang Ghedung Association, the community-based organisation of Tamang people.
Tamang community is celebrating the 2057th Sonam Lhosar this year.
In Tamang language, Lho means new and Sar means year, or when combined, New Year.
Unlike the previous years, Sonam Lhosar will be celebrated virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic this year, said Acting Chairman of Nepal Tamang Ghedung Kumar Ghising.
Following the Cabinet decision, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued public notice on Tuesday declaring February 12 as public holiday to mark the festival.
