Kathmandu, Dec. 17: Snowfall is expected in the high mountainous region from Friday due to the western disturbance and western low-pressure system that comes with the western wind, according to the Department of Hydrology and Metrology (DHM).


There will be a partial to a normal cloud cover in Sudurpaschim, Karnali, Lumbini and Gandaki provinces from Friday. It will remain mainly fair in the rest of the provinces, including the Kathmandu Valley, said Sameer Shrestha, meteorologist at the DHM.

According to Shrestha, the effects will be noticed tonight and tomorrow. There is a possibility of light snowfall in some places in the high hills and mountains of the Sudurpaschim, Karnali and Gandaki. Light rain is also expected in some parts of Sudurpaschim. Due to the western disturbance, the temperature is likely to drop further in the coming days, he added.

Similarly, the sky will remain partly to generally cloudy in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Suduraaschim provinces on Friday and partly cloudy in the rest of the provinces.
“Light rain is likely to occur at one or two places of Sudurpashchim Province. There are chances of light snowfall in a few places in the high mountainous region,” the DHM said.
It will be partly to generally cloudy, with chances of light snowfall in a few places in the Western and Central Nepal.

The department has urged people to take necessary safety and precautions to avoid cold and snowfall as the weather system may affect the daily life of the people including mountaineering and air transport.
According to the latest report of DHM, the minimum temperature in Kathmandu Valley on Thursday was less than 3.0 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was 17.5 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in Jumla was minus 5.7 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature in Bhairahawa was 28.4 degrees
Celsius.
