Sindhupalchowk, Dec. 31

Small and big rivers meant for kayaking and boating for the tourists during Visit Nepal Year 2020 are contaminated with the sewages from the human settlements in Sindhupalchowk.

The world famous rivers for boating, including the Sunkoshi, Bhotekoshi, Indrawati and Bramyani are all contaminated with the sewages of the market places and human settlements.  The sewers in almost all settlements located near the rivers are found mixed into the rivers.

Sewages of the market places and human settlements of Ghirpu, Vhaku, Gambu, Barhabise, Lamosanghu, Khadichaur, Kothe, Balefi, Bhaisen, Sukute and Chehere are found directly connected to the Sunkoshi and Bhotekoshi rivers.

In Indrawati River, the sewages of Melamchi, Bahunpate and Sipaghat have been mixed.

Likewise, the people of Jalabire and Naubise Balefi have mixed their sewages in the Bramyani River.

Due to the sewages the rivers are badly contaminated, discouraging the tourists to kayak and boat in the rivers.

The water life is also affected and human health is getting deteriorated due to the water pollution.

No action has been taken to stop the human behaviour. Ward Chair of Bafeli Rural Municipality 7 Karkel Lama said that the rural municipality would control the practice of mixing sewage into the rivers.

The people defecate at the rivers openly, although the district was declared an open defecation-free zone four months ago.

When asked, chairman of District Coordination Committee Krishna Gopal Shrestha said he would monitor the settlements and stop the activities which polluted the rivers.
