Kathmandu, Feb. 27: Murder cases in three districts of the Kathmandu Valley have been on rise in the last three years, according to record of Nepal Police. On an average, four to five people are killed every month in three districts of the valley, according to the statistics of Nepal Police.
A total of 27 cases of homicide have taken place in the Kathmandu Valley in the last six months from July to December, 2020. Of these, five took place in July, four in August, three in September, four in October, five in November and six in December.
In the last three fiscal years, the Kathmandu Valley reported 148 homicide cases.
According to the police, 53 people were killed in the Kathmandu Valley in the FY 2018/19, 60 in FY 2019/20 and 35 in FY 2020/21.
It has been found that perpetrators in a majority of the murder cases were close relative or acquaintance.
Spokesperson of Nepal Police and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar said, “Extra marital affairs and attempt to hide it, monetary transactions, quarrels and tensions among the family members, are the major reasons behind impulsive killings.”
According to former AIG Navaraj Dhakal, crime is more related to psychology than the numbers. “It is more important to ensure the safety of general public than ascertaining the number of murder case,” he said.
“The homicide cases in the United States are higher than Nepal, but people there feel safe,” said Dhakal, adding, “Cases of murder have a great psychological impact on a common man,” Dhakal said.
According to him, moral science and the management of psychological stress are two important things that can reduce the heinous crime in the society.
