Kathmandu, Sept.5: Even though trucks of garbage and containers are now on the move to dump Kathmandu’s waste which was piled for almost two weeks, the main chowks are yet to be cleaned.
It might take five to six days to manage the garbage left on the streets if the weather conditions remain dry, said chief of the Department of Environment of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Hari Kumar Shrestha.
The garbage collection started on Wednesday after 18 days of break. The piles are still seen in streets including Baneshwor, Koteshwor, Kalanki, Kalimati and Khasibazar.

During the monsoon, the transportation of garbage to the landfill site in Okharpauwa of Nuwakot district gets disrupted because of the slippery road of around 300 metres inside the landfill site.
According to Shrestha, the collection of waste has not been possible in a short time as it has accumulated for a long time.

Every day the Kathmandu Valley generates around 1200 metric tonnes of solid waste, of which 50 per cent comes from the KMC alone. It is said that about 15,000 metric tons of garbage has been collected in 18 days.
According to Arjun Jung Thapa, Director General at the Department of Roads, obstruction was not the reason for not collecting the waste. “The road inside the landfill site, which is already black-topped, became slippery during the monsoon. However, after Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba requested us to manage the road, we are working on it,” Thapa said.
