Kathmandu, Jan. 30: The Martyrs Day is being observed by commemorating the role of all known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of establishment and restoration of democracy through various democratic movements.

Magh 16 of the Nepali lunar calendar every year is marked as the Martyr’s Day, in memory of those who were executed by the Rana rulers in 1941 for initiating democratic movement in the country and several others who fought for the country in later dates.
Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Shukra Raj Shastri, Dashrath Chand and Ganga Lal Shrestha were executed by the autocratic Rana rulers for initiating democratic movement in the country and helping guide the nation and people out of dictatorship and suppression.

The martyr’s week, which is being observed across the country, will conclude Sunday.
The Prime Minister and a limited number of high-ranking personalities are scheduled to pay tribute to martyrs at Lainchaur-based Martyrs Memorial Park, where a condolence assembly will be organised.
Similarly, in honour of those who attained martyrdom, Nepal Army is also scheduled to offer cannon salute at 12:00 in Tudikhel.
The Martyrs Day has been marked every year since 2012 B.S. under the aegis of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).

Likewise, as a part of the week-long event, a heartfelt tribute was paid to martyrs Gangalal Shrestha and Dasrath Chand amid a function organised here at Shoba Bhagwati, where the two heroes were executed on this day.
KMC Mayor Bidhya Sundar Shakya, Deputy-Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi and officials of the metropolis paid tribute to martyrs Shrestha and Chand by garlanding their life-size statues.

Earlier this week, the KMC organised commemorative programmes to pay tributes to martyr Shukraraj Shastri at Pachali, Teku on January 24 and at Sifal to pay tribute to martyr Dharma Bhakta Mathema on January 27 as per the time-honoured tradition.
