Kathmandu, Nov. 18: Former Constituent Assembly (CA) member and chairman of Civil Group Ichchha Raj Tamang is currently in custody after being accused of swindling millions of rupees of depositors in banking and cooperative businesses.
Complaints against him have not stopped even now. So far, 1,441 victims have lodged complaints against him under charging him of fraud.
According to the police, even now three to four victims visit the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Maharajgunj every day with complaints against him.
Based on the registered complaints, police have been preparing to file a charge sheet of misappropriating Rs. 5.93 billion as property equivalent to losses from Tamang, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shyam Mahato of the Bureau said.
“There is still time for conducting further investigation against him. Even today, there are people who come to lodge complaints against him. We are investigating further,” said SP Mahato. The case against him is yet to be forwarded to the District Court, Kathmandu for hearing, said police. “We have been soliciting further complaints from victims along with concrete evidences of cheating and banking fraud to make our investigation strong and supported by evidences,” SP Mahato said.
A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested 12 people, including Tamang, on fraud charges on October 5, 2021.
It has been alleged that millions of rupees have been swindled from the Civil Savings & Credit Co-operative Limited run by Tamang and he is directly involved in it. Police had arrested 12 staff of the cooperative including Keshav Lal Shrestha, Bijaya Bikram Shah and Alina Tuladhar.
Similarly, the CIB had arrested Buddha Raj Tamang, Kaustubh Chetan Dhungana, Bhagwan Bahadur Singh, Sangeet Shrestha, Shankar Prasad Pathak, Maya Nani Maharjan, Rakesh Maharjan and Harihar Prasad Lamichhane. At present there are more than 3,000 depositors in the cooperative and over 2,200 active depositors.
