Kapilvastu, July 17: The Ashoka Pillar at an archaeological place of Gotihawa in Kapilvastu municipality-5 has been submerged for the past one month. The Pillar built with silts and stones will be damaged under the water, said archaeologists.
Ashoka, emperor of the Maurya Dynasty, reached the place during his visit to the birthplace of Shakyamuni Buddha in Rupandehi. Gotihawa is the birthplace of Karkuchanda Buddha prior to Siddhartha Gautam Buddha. Gotihawa, which dates back to 1770 years, is one of the three Ashoka Pillars in Nepal. The Pillar is in a dilapidated condition for lack of conservation.
The over 10 feet Pillar has been submerged under three feet water, said local people, adding that it is flooded for two to three months during every monsoon. Only five feet lower part of the Pillar has been conserved. The upper parts are open, and as a result, they are damaging due to rain, wind, sunrays and particles.
When asked, project manager of the Lumbini Development Trust Saroj Bhattarai said plan is afoot to conserve the Pillar in coordination with the Department of Archaeology.
