Kathmandu, Nov. 9: Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) General Prabhu Ram Sharma is embarking on a four-day official visit to India upon the formal invitation of his counterpart MM Naravane on Tuesday.
The Cabinet meeting held on October 28 gave a nod for his official visit to India.
During the visit, the Army Chief will be conferred with the honorary title of the Indian Army Chief by Indian President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The practice follows a seven-decade-old tradition of conferring Army Chiefs of each other’s country with the honorary title. Commander-in-Chief of Indian Army KM Cariappa was the first Indian Army chief to be decorated with the title in 1950. Similarly, Surendra Bahadur Shah was the first Nepali Army Chief to be decorated with the title in November, 1969. Shah was the general of Nepali Army from 1965 to 1970.
Of late, on November 5, 2020, Indian Army Chief Naravane was also honoured with the same title by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
According to Nepali Army spokesperson and Brigadier General Shantosh Ballave Poudyal, during the visit, CoAS Sharma is scheduled to meet with his counterpart Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane, and visit different Indian army camps.
Wrapping up the visit, CoAS Sharma will return home on November 12.
