Kathmandu, Feb. 6: Tribhuvan University (TU) has agreed to resolve the problems faced by its part time teachers. TU and its Part Time Lecturers' Association recently inked an agreement to this effect.
As per the agreement, TU will upgrade the part time teachers to the status of contract-based ones. The part time lecturers, who were protesting for a long time demanding that they be provided with facilities of assistant lecturers of the varsity, have withdrawn their protests after the agreement. They have been receiving wages based on their working hours.
Prof. Dr. Shiva Lal Bhusal, rector of the university, said TU had already asked its constituent campuses to implement the agreement and pay them from their internal resources.
Meanwhile, TU has introduced a tougher process to recruit part time lecturers at the university from now onwards. It decided to recruit part time teachers through Tribhuvan University Service Commission in coming days.
Earlier, anyone having required academic certificates could be appointed as a part time teacher in TU if he/she was close to Campus Chief.
TU had formed a dialogue committee consisting of Vice-Chancellor, Rector and Registrar of the university to resolve the problems faced by the part time lecturers.
In line with the agreement, all part time teachers will get Rs. 590 for each class -- up from previous Rs. 300. Likewise, TU has also agreed to announce vacancies of lecturers every year.
