Dhangadi, Jan. 10: Tharu Community in the district is getting prepared for the Maghi celebrations as it is the major festival for the community here. They began the preparation before a week to mark it in a grand manner.
The community is busy collecting fire-wood from the jungle, preparing leaf plates and getting other required materials and managing pig meat too to mark the Maghi.
The community has to book pig meat they require before some days of the celebration. It has a tradition of having it on the day.
Ganga Chaudhary, a local resident of Bhajani Municipality-2, Mohanpur said that the community was preparing with excitement because it was not only a major festival but also the beginning of the year. “We are collecting fire-wood and leafs from the jungle and preparing leaf plates to mark it,” she added.
The community also has finalised meat demand list. Chaudhary said she had demanded for five kilogram meat for the celebration this year. “I purchase same quantity of meat and other materials each year,” she added.
According to her, Tharus eat dhikri and pig meat to mark the festival. Dhikri is a dish prepared of rice flour.
Bharthari Chaudhary who has flouring mills said that there was huge pressure in his mill. “I am working double the hours of regular days to serve the people here,” he added.
People of this community prepare well for three-day long Maghi celebrations from Paush last to Magh second. They prepare delicious foods from rice-flour, food grains and meat for the celebrations.
Kamal Prasad Chaudhary, chief of Kailari Rural Municipality says that the locals were collecting fire-wood from the jungle to cook meat and other items and females were busy managing other required materials.
“Leaf plates are important for us because we have a culture of having meat and dhikhri on that day,” he added. He also said that local wine was already prepared for the Maghi celebration.
Chaudhary noticed mobility in the local community due to the festival. “Activities are on rise in market places,” he said.
