By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, Aug. 16: The Gorkhapatra Corporation management has appointed Bhimsen Thapaliya as the Acting Editor-in-Chief of The Rising Nepal daily effective from August 17.

The corporation management appointed Executive Editor Thapaliya as the Chief Editor on Sunday after Jagadish Pokhrel resigned from the post.

Born in Tripurasundari Gaupalika-6 of Dhading district on August 10, 1967, Thapaliya joined The Rising Nepal as a Sub-editor on May 28, 1995.

In his 25-year journalistic career at this daily, he has headed the News Desk and News Reporting at different times. Before being appointed the Chief Editor, he was working as the chief of the Features section of the daily.

Thapaliya holds a Master’s Degree in English Literature and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Tribhuvan University.  Winner of Environmental Journalism Award-2003 presented by NEFEJ, he writes on environment, wildlife, and sustainable development issues.

After his appointment as the Chief Editor, Thapaliya said that he would strive to raise the content quality of The Rising Nepal, the first English language broadsheet daily of the nation.  “TRN has a highly motivated and hard working team. I will work with this team to upgrade its readability,” he said.

In recent years, TRN has made important changes with content diversification, layout improvement and page expansion. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of content quality enhancement, he added.

The Corporation management bade farewell to outgoing Chief Editor Pokhrel on Sunday appreciating his notable contributions to the national daily.

Speaking on the occasion, Executive Chairman of the Corporation Krishna Murari Bhandary said that The Rising Nepal has a great scope to take readership to a new height, and the corporation management is ready to extend the necessary support for it.

Consulting Editor of Gorkhapatra Corporation Gopal Khanal said that the scope of The Rising Nepal and Gorkhapatra is widening at a time when private broadsheets are struggling to survive.

“In the last one and half years, we have made visible changes in the quality of The Rising Nepal and Gorkhapatra and further upgradation will continue,” he added.

Outgoing Chief Editor Pokhrel said that The Rising Nepal has succeeded in giving a new vibrant direction and established its position in the market in recent years.

Acting Chief Editor of Gorkhapatra Daily Shridhar Acharya said that Gorkhapatra and TRN as co-publications are not rivals and we are now working in this collaborative spirit.
