Bhaktapur, March 1: Madhyapur Thimi Municipality has started paving stones in the old settlement of the municipality area by removing the asphalt.
Stones are being laid in old settlements and heritage areas, said Mayor Madan Sundar Shrestha.
The municipality is laying stones from Balkumari temple in Ward No. 4 and 5 to Hatti Mahankal temple.
The municipality has mobilised a consumer committee to restructure the heritage sites in the area.
The municipality has allocated a budget of Rs. 20 million for the current fiscal year, Mayor Shrestha said. The municipality has a plan to complete stone laying work by the coming New Year, before celebrating the Bisket Jatra.
“We do not use cement in this process. The traditional city should look the way it was in ancient times. So we are working to reform the city to give it a traditional look,” he said.
The locals are happy with the stone placing programme in their old settlement, he added.
By placing stones in the main road section which connects Purano Thimi from Naya Thimi, it will help the heritage walkers to enjoy the beauty of the city, he said. “We have set a target of completing the work by mid-April,” he informed.
About 4-inch thick stones will be placed on the road. Only sand, bricks, stone dust and coarse stone will be used.
Stones are brought from a factory in Sindhupalchowk district.
