Kathmandu, Jan. 6: A group of 16 activists from Banke district ended their sit-in which they were staging at Maitighar Mandala, Kathmandu, after 41 days on Tuesday evening after inking a four-point deal with the government.
The agreement was reached between the government talk committee led by joint-secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Pradeep Koirala and Ruby Khan, an activist leading the protest.
All hailing from Banke, they were staging the sit-in from November 25 demanding justice for the murder of Nankunni Dhobi and Nirmala Kurmi.
Nankunni was found dead at her home in Janaki Rural Municipality on July 20 while Nirmala had gone missing in January 2010 from the same local level. Two years before her disappearance, two sons of Nirmala were murdered in a space of 10 days.
The group of activists from Banke had earlier staged a 12-day sit-in in October in Kathmandu after walking for 20 days from Nepalgunj.
The group had then reached agreement with the MoHA to form a probe committee to look into the incidents.
The committee then led by joint-secretary at MoHA Hira Lal Regmi to investigate the incidents submitted a report to Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand.
The report has mentioned that Nirmala Kurmi, a resident of Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan Ward No. 17, was killed with the intention of grabbing 10 bighas of land, which were in the names her husband Mahlu Kurmi and elder son Ram Sagar.
The land certificates were then taken by Badshah Kurmi, the major accused. The report stated involvement of eight individuals including Badshah into the incidents.
Police arrested seven of the accused but were released later. However, Badshah, a member of the first Constituent Assembly, has not been arrested yet.
As per the agreement on Tuesday, the MoHA has pledged to initiate an investigation from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) into the incidents.
