Kathmandu, Dec. 17: As The Rising Nepal enters its 56th year of publication, the paper has been asked to diversify its content and improve its circulation.
Executive Chairman of Gorkhapatra Corporation (GC), the publisher of The Rising Nepal (TRN), Krishna Murari Bhandary stressed on the need to take the paper to the reach of the masses. “As a mass media, it needs to be among the masses. It is now time to reflect on its distribution,” he said.
He also stated how other papers had grown immensely in a relatively short time, comparing their trajectory to the take-off of a fighter plane, and alerted the paper and the corporation’s staff that if they did not work towards making the organisation vibrant and its publications attractive, it would not be able to support them in their old age.
Nevertheless, Bhandary commended the daily’s work, especially during the pandemic, and expressed the management’s commitment to support its growth.
Professor P Kharel, former Editor-in-Chief of TRN, shared his special affection for the national daily and asked it to diversify its content, giving space to a wide range of ideas and content before the other media.
“The government must also help us in this regard, by giving us exclusive tips and information before other papers,” Kharel said. Gopal Khanal, consultant editor of GC, said that TRN was on the cusp of greatness but required effort from the employees. Praising the publication’s inclusive, young and talented team, Khanal stated that there were many expectations from the paper which it must strive to meet.
Furthermore, Khanal emphasised the need to focus on development stories. “TRN works in the interest of the nation and the interest of the nation lies in development,” he said.
Established on December 16, 1965, TRN is the nation’s oldest broadsheet English-language daily. In this time, it has made many strides and has suffered some setbacks.
Acting Editor-in-Chief Bhimsen Thapaliya reflected on this and shared some of the transformative measures the paper had undertaken in recent years.
Deputy Executive Editor Parmeshwor Devkota welcomed all the guests gathered to mark the paper’s anniversary.Former Editor-in-Chief Shyam Bahadur KC was also present at the event, along with the editors of all of GC’s publications.
