Kathmandu, Aug. 31: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has instructed the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) to manage garbage of the city as soon as possible as the waste has accumulated across the city for the last several days.

Prime Minister Deuba Monday called Mayor of KMC Bidhya Sundar Shakya and Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi at his residence in Balubatar and instructed them to manage the garbage without delay.
"There will be full support of the government, but make arrangements for garbage collection immediately,” Prime Minister Deuba told them.

Prime Minister Deuba directed them to make arrangements for garbage collection rather than seeking coordination on part of other government agencies.
He also instructed Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand to make necessary arrangements to ensure peace and security in the landfill site at Sisdol, according to a statement received from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
During the meeting, Mayor Shakya said that it was difficult to dispose garbage because of the dire condition of the road leading to the landfill in Nuwakot.

After getting information about the poor condition of the road, Prime Minister Deuba telephoned Director General of the Department of Roads Arjun Jung Thapa and instructed him to take immediate measures for the smooth operation of the road.
Giving feedback after the meeting, Mayor Shakya said that an immediate and sustainable solution to waste management had been discussed with the Prime Minister. "In the meeting with Prime Minister Deuba, we have requested the government to complete the construction of the landfill site at Bancharedanda as soon as possible and create an environment for its handover."

Earlier, on August 24, Mayor Shakya had requested the Prime Minister in writing to take initiative for waste management as the problem of garbage disposal was becoming overwhelming.
Stating that the talks with Prime Minister Deuba were positive, Shakya informed that he was ready to invest in the construction of the road to the Sisdol landfill site.
According to Hari Kumar Shrestha, chief at the Environment Management Department of KMC, collection of the waste was likely to begin from Tuesday.

“There was a road problem earlier but now another problem has come up. We are unable to fulfil all the demands of the locals at the Sisdol site, but we are preparing to pick up the waste from tomorrow,” Shrestha said.
Some 150 trucks carry the waste from the Valley on normal days, but now only 50 trucks are operating, due to which garbage heaps are giving an ugly look to the Valley. Every day, around 1,000 metric tonnes of waste is generated in the Valley.
