Kathmandu, June 3: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader and lawmaker Narayan Kaji Shrestha Tuesday said that the border dispute between Nepal and India should immediately be resolved through diplomatic dialogue.
Speaking in the meeting of National Assembly today, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shrestha also urged the government to settle the problems, including all the unequal treaties inked in the past between the two countries, at the earliest.
Stating that the Indian government had interfered in many aspects of Nepal, Shrestha urged the southern neighbour to vacate the occupied Nepali territories.
“India has encroached Nepal’s territory in Limpiyadhura, Lipulek, Kalapani and Susta, it has unearthed several pillars along the Nepal-India border,” he stated.
He also urged the Indian side to sit for talks in order to solve the dispute on the basis of historic evidences and proofs.
“Let’s talk. Let’s sit as soon as possible for diplomatic dialogue. If we receive our land that belongs to our country according to the historic facts, the main problem will be resolved,” Shrestha added.
According to him, the unequal treaties and agreements that were inked between the two countries in the past should be reviewed and replaced by new ones.
“Let’s review the 1950 treaty. Let’s replace the treaty by a new one based on the mutual respect,” the NCP leader said.
Shrestha blamed the southern neighbour for repeatedly meddling in Nepal’s internal affairs.
It is essential for the Indian establishment to correct its interfering behaviour by self-criticising, said Shrestha, adding that Nepal confronted the Indian blockade for promulgating a new Constitution.
He also said that Nepal faced transit problem due to India. He also expressed his concerns over the Indian Prime Minister’s unwilling to accept the report prepared by the Eminent Persons’ Group representing the two countries.
According to Shrestha, although the Group had been assigned to take the bilateral relations to a new height with various five guiding principles, its report had not been accepted till date.
“India has not accepted the report till date. It has made us unhappy. We are ready to accept it any time. Let’s initiate to take the bilateral relationship to a new height by accepting the report and adopting its recommendations,” he added.
Stating that the bilateral relations between the two countries would be strengthened only by abiding by the sovereign equality, Shrestha maintained that the two countries should reciprocally be serious about the mutual interest and common progress.
“India should be ready to address the legitimate concerns of sensitivity,” he stated.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not continue the old tendency of the Indian establishment; Shrestha drew the attention of the Indian government to correct the tendency of its encroachment.
Similarly, he also said that the northern neighbour, China, must also not do anything that would encourage India in encroaching Nepal.
He also urged to correct the 2015 treaty between China and India, drawing the attention of the Chinese government to self-evaluate about the treaty.
