Kathmandu, Mar. 2: The government has clarified that the Supreme Court's verdict reinstating the dissolved House of Representatives (HoR) has prevented Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli from stepping down.
Minister for Communication and Information Technology Parbat Gurung, who is also the spokesperson of the government, made this remark at a regular press conference organised to make the Cabinet decisions public on Monday.
Responding to a question whether the Prime Minister should resign or not, Minister Gurung claimed that the SC had given the Prime Minister no other constitutional option but to run the state affairs.
Minister Gurung said, "The Supreme Court has ruled that it is constitutional and ethical for a prime minister of a majority parliamentary party to run the government."
The leader of the parliamentary party, which has won a majority through elections, has no other option but to form a government and run the state.
The Prime Minister cannot resign as the court has stopped him from doing so, Minister Gurung said.
Stating that the leaders of Prachanda-Madhav Nepal faction who have been demanding resignation on the basis of morality did not have their own moral ground, Gurung said that it would be appropriate for them to retire from politics.
