Kathmandu, Feb. 16: Nepali people across the country are marking Basanta Panchami (Saraswoti Puja) on Tuesday.
The festival is observed by worshipping Saraswoti, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning, art, music and culture.
In Nepal, especially Hindus and people from the Sikh communities observe this festival. The festival also
heralds the arrival of the spring season.
On this day, schools and colleges organise pujas to pay homage to the goddess of knowledge. Students participate in the function by starting the day with a ritual bath in the morning, followed by a day-long fast.
Saraswoti Puja is also taken as a day of beginning to learn alphabets for kids. That is why, many schools that remained closed until recently due to COVID-19 fear, has resumed their classes in view of enrolling new kids on the occasion.
