Kathmandu, Dec. 25: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has extended best wishes to all Christian Nepalis living inside and outside the country on the occasion of Christmas.
Christians all across the world celebrate Christmas every year on December 25 to mark the birth of Jesus Christ.
President Bhandari in her greeting Friday stated that such religious festivals played an important role in strengthening national unity by enhancing the spirit of harmony, tolerance and solidarity among diverse communities. She also hoped that it would help promote peace and inspire everyone to build a prosperous Nepal.
Christmas is a time for Christians to visit church, sing carols and exchange gifts with their family and friends. Many also have Christmas trees in their homes and dress up as Santa Claus.
According to the 2011 census, 1.4 percent of Nepalis are Christians and they observe the day with much fervour and joy.
In recent years, many non-Christians have also started celebrating the festival. Hotels and businesses, especially in tourist areas, put up decorations to attract customers.
