Life in the Terai Madhesh has been affected due to the adverse weather caused by a cold wave for the last four days.
Siraha, the eastern part of Terai region has been affected due to a sudden fall in the temperature for the past few days.
People, especially from the poor families are finding it hard to fend off the winter cold. Increased cold and a cold wave have caused an adverse weather, directly causing impact on people’s daily lives to health.
The market wears a deserted look in the morning and evening due to cold wave along with dense fog.
The major market areas of the district remained closed till 10 am and also closed early in the evening.
Jagat Prasad Yadav, a shopkeeper of Rajbiraj said people’s movement in the district headquarters, towns and market areas had significantly gone down with a dip in temperature in the past four days.
“It is also hard for shopkeepers to open our shops. However, the selling of warm clothes has increased lately.”
Owing to a sudden increase in cold for the past few days, the community schools of Saptakoshi Municipality have been closed for five days.
Chief of the division Ram Dev Chaudhary, the education division of the Sapakoshi Municipality, the schools of the municipality will be closed till Sunday.
“If the weather will witness any improvement within this Sunday, then the schools will open from Monday, otherwise, the vacation would be extended.”
Majority of the children studying in the community schools belongs to Dalit and poor families, said Chaudhary adding that and majority of them lack warm clothes.
“Considering their health condition, we have decided to close the schools until the weather witness some improvements.”
There were total four secondary and seven primary community schools in the municipality, where total 3,636 students are studying.
Likewise, the agricultural sector has also been affected due to a sudden increase in cold.
Increased cold and a cold wave have directly causing impact on lives of Dalit communities and poor families of the district.
Mostly, the families of daily wages labourers were hard hit by the cold wave. Children, elderly people, pregnant and women in post-natal period were adversely affected by the cold.
“In a lack of nutritious food and warm clothes, people living in thatched roof cottages have been affected by the cold,” Bhola Kumar Yadav Chief of the Pakari Health Post said.
He asked people to eat nutritious foods available in the households and keep themselves warm.
Similarly, due to the rising cold, life in Mahottari has been badly affected.
The schools of Aurohi municipality and Loharpati municipality have decided to close following the increasing cold.
According to the Aurohi municipality, the schools of the city will remain close till Monday. The office on Monday will decide if the schools will open or remain close.
There were three primary, four secondary and 16 schools in the municipality.
Likewise, the schools of Loharpatti have decided to close for a week. The city has total 21 schools.
The number of patients with common cold, fever, breathing complications has increased in the Jaleshwor Hospital.
