The Non Resident Nepalis Association (NRNA) has conducted a study for the construction of international-standard and well-equipped public toilets in the Kathmandu metropolis.
The first phase of study covers Kalanki, Balaju, the area in front of the President's Office, Jayabageshwori Sifal Ground, Koteshwor and Swoyambhu ring road. The next round of study will be carried out by identifying the necessity.
Though the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has been in the process of implementing the public toilet construction project since the past five years, but no substantive progress has been achieved so far. According to KMC Urban Planning Commission vice chair Saroj Basnet, sustainable management aspect has been focused in the public toilet construction project.
"We have to ensure about facilities for public from such infrastructure and complete management of waste to be produced from there before the implementation of project," he said.
The NRNA has proposed to construct a 40 feet long and 16 feet wide toilet. It will have three urinals for male and two receptacles for defecation. Similarly, there will be four toilets for female with the sanitary pads management facility and one for persons with disabilities.
Likewise, there will be space for changing baby diapers and for breast feeding as well. All the features have been designed with an estimate that 100 people will use it per hour.
Presently, there are 28 public toilets in the Kathmandu metropolis, but most of them with no facility of running water and soap.
