Kathmandu Jan. 24: Nepal has climbed 11 points above in the Global Corruption Index 2019 of the Transparency International. The index shows that the country has lower corruption instances than the previous year.
The annual Corruption Perception Index (CPI) of the Transparency International released here Thursday shows Nepal has improved its corruption perception index by jumping to 113th position from124nd in 2018.
Nepal is ranked 113th out of 180 countries in the corruption index 2019 while it was ranked 124th among 180 countries in 2018.
As per the CPI-2019, the country’s score also rose to 34 in 2019 from 31 in 2018.
The CPI measures the extent of corruption within a country on a scale ranging from zero to 100.
The countries securing higher scores are rated as the least corrupt and those with low scorers are perceived to be the most corrupt.
It was Nepal’s best score in seven years. Nepal had received 31 score in CPI-2013, 29 in CPI-2014, 27 in CPI-2015, 29 in CPI-2016 and 31 in CPI-2017 and 2018
Nepal is still the fourth least corrupt country in South Asia. Nepal is behind Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka. Bhutan ranks 25, India 80 and Sri Lanka 93 in the CPI-2019
Likewise, Pakistan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have been ranked 120th, 130th, 146th and 173rd respectively.
Likewise, the top countries are New Zealand and Denmark with 87 scores each followed by Finland (86), Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland each scoring 85 each and followed by Norway, Netherland, Germany and Luxembourg with scores above 79.
Similarly, the bottoms countries in CPI are Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen, scoring 9, 12, 13 and 15 respectively.
While the remaining countries have scored above 15, the report shows.
However, the average score of South Asia is 68.
