Kathmandu, July 25: Hindus across the country are observing Nag Panchami today by pasting pictures of the Nag (serpent god) above the main entrance of their houses using cow dung.
The day is also marked by visiting Nag Pokhari, Taudaha and other ponds dedicated to snake gods and worshipping the serpent deity. Nag Pokhari is speciall1y decorated for this day.
Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the moonlit-fortnight in the Nepali month of Shrawan (July and August). This is the time when serpents come out of their holes that get filled with rainwater in search of drier shelters.
It is believed that marking the festival prevents snakebites during the rainy season.
A big fair is being held at Changunarayan Temple in Bhaktapur. There is a tradition of pasting the images of Nag at the main gate after worshipping lord Changunarayan.
