Kathmandu, June 12: This year's monsoon has finally entered the country through Eastern Nepal on Friday.
According to a special bulletin issued by the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology this afternoon at 2:00 pm, the monsoon has entered two days ahead of its scheduled date.
The amended monsoon onset date for Nepal is June 13. The MFD had made this revision after 30 years. As per the revision, monsoon will retreat on October 2. Earlier, September 23 was the withdrawal date.
According to Manju Basi, meteorologist at the Division, after the development of low pressure area around the Bay of Bengal, the monsoon enters Nepal from eastern region of Province 1, Province 2 and Bagmati Province.
"The monsoon is likely to spread across the country in a day or two," she said. As the monsoon is expected to be active in the coming weeks, light to moderate rains are expected in many parts of the country, heavy rains in some places and very heavy rains in some places. "The Meteorological Department is continuously monitoring the monsoon. Therefore, we request everyone to get the latest weather information," she said.
Some parts of the Kathmandu Valley on Friday afternoon also received heavy rains for a few minutes, according to her.
"Currently, the eastern part of the country has a mixed effect of eastern winds and the central and western parts of the country have a mixed effect of western and local winds," according to the weather bulletin.
In the last 24 hours, Kathmandu received more rainfall with 30 mm than other stations across the country. In the same period, Nepalgunj recorded 22.4 mm rainfall.
Meanwhile, issuing weather forecast for next one week, MFD this afternoon informed that the weather will remain generally to mostly cloudy through the week until June 17.
Most of the places in all the provinces are likely to witness light to medium rains throughout a week.
One or two places of the Province No. 1, Bagmati, Gandaki and Sudurpaschim are likely to get heavy rains with thundering and lightning.
Light to medium range of snowfall is also possible in the high Mountains and the Himalayan region. Maximum wind pressure will decrease in the day time and the minimum temperature in the night will not see visible change, according to the update.
