Kathmandu, Feb. 12: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that study, monitoring and evaluation works would make projects result-oriented.
“The monitoring process will help in rectifying the shortcomings and making the work effective.”
Prime Minister Oli said during a signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on project evaluation between the Social Welfare Council and five different universities at his official residence in Baluwatar on Thursday.
He expressed his belief that the evaluation of the project by the best students who have passed the university would make the projects more result-oriented and help the students broaden the scope of their knowledge.
He said that the ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali’ policy pursued by the government as a national aspiration was a scientific and a right policy.
The policy of ‘Happy Nepali’ can be meaningful only in an empowered, just and fearless environment, he said.
He added that the regulatory body should focus on regulation, monitoring and evaluation for good governance, transparency and cleanliness.
Expressing his worries over the alarming rise in the country’s dependency on foreign goods, Prime Minister Oli said, “Our dependency is frightening. We have only become consumers, buyers and sellers of foreign products. We are consuming more than we need.”
He stressed the need for taking the country towards a self-reliant economy along with basic production and consumption.
The country should move forward according to the ‘principle of good use’ and for that natural resources, land, mines, manpower, intellectual knowledge, traditional skills, technology, knowledge and good should be properly utilised, he added.
Tourism sector can be developed by protecting and promoting historical, cultural and religious heritages, said Prime Minister Oli, adding that the Buddha’s relics, which have not been excavated as far, were in Ramgram, which was of tourist importance.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen and chairperson of the Social Welfare Council Juli Kumari Mahato stressed the need for making the social sector result-oriented.
Similarly, Prof. Dr. Dharma Kanta Baskota, Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, said that the research center under the university would be activated and developed as a ‘think tank’.
Pushkar Khati, member secretary of the Social Welfare Council, informed that as per the agreement, university students would be able to evaluate projects worth up to Rs. 10 million.
In this fiscal year, 587 projects will be evaluated by students. Similarly, 532 projects will be evaluated by their parties, he informed.
Similarly, Vice-chairman of the Social Welfare Council Dr. Padam Prasad Khatiwada informed that Rs. 40 billion was being invested annually in the social sector through non-governmental organisations.
