Kathmandu, July 6: The Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range on Monday detained two persons for withdrawing cash amount worth Rs. 3.4 million on different dates using an expired VISA card from the ATM booths in the Kathmandu Valley.
Acting upon information provided by Siddhartha Bank, the Range deployed a special squad to arrest them.
During the police operation, the team detained Jagat Bahadur Gurung, 57, a permanent resident of Solukhumbu and temporarily residing at Bhatkeko Pool in KMC-5 and Sabitri Gurung, 30, of Parsa district and temporarily residing with Jagat Gurung. They were taken into custody and Rs. 2.1 million was seized from them.
Superintendent of Police and spokesperson for the Range Ramesh Kumar Basnet said that the duo had used Lloyds Visa Debit card, London to withdraw the amount. The card's date was found expired during the police investigation, SP Basnet said. The card was issued on the name of Jagat Bahadur Gurung himself.
"How and through which medium, they were able to issue the money is still under investigation," said SP Basnet.
Gurung duo had used the ATM booth placed in Chabahil, Kalopool, Hattisar and Bhatbhateni areas. Of the total withdrawn amount, they had deposited Rs. 1.5 million rupees in a cooperative office.
