By Sabita Sharma, Kathmandu, Nov. 25: The Meeting of Council of Ministers held today has given approval to the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation to declare the new height of Mount Everest.
Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Padma Kumari Aryal had presented the proposal at the meeting, seeking approval to declare the new height of Mt. Everest.
Minister Aryal informed that the works for measurement of the new height of Mt. Everest had kicked off on the Fiscal Year 2075/76. "As the measurement work is in the final stage, the government is preparing to officially declare the new height of Mt. Everest," she said.
"It is the first time that the government has measured the height of the tallest peak in the world by using its own resources and equipment," added Minister Aryal.
The Department of Survey had revealed that the height of the Himalayan ranges in the northern part of Nepal was affected by the 2015 earthquake. The ministry had initiated the measurement work in order to ascertain whether the height of Mt. Everest had changed post-earthquake.
The ministry will now disclose the new height of Mt. Everest Soon.
In 2019 when the President of China Xi Jin Ping had visited Nepal, both nations had agreed to declare the new height of Mt. Everest jointly.
As per the agreement, the teams of Nepal and China have been working jointly to measure the height of Mt. Everest.
According to the measurement done in 1954 by Survey of India, the height of Mt. Everest is 8,848 meters.
