Kathmandu, Feb. 9: Maj. General Binoj Basnyat (retd) of Nepali Army has said that the issue of Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has been unnecessarily politicised instead of building a common view among the political parties to accept the grant and convert it into a model project for infrastructure development in Nepal.
“For long, I have been studying MCC compact papers, I have so far not seen any link and association with the national security issue. It does not jeopardise the national sovereignty and geo-strategic effect,” Basnyat, who is also political and security analyst, said while Talking to The Rising Nepal on Tuesday.
The compact has been heavily politicised by our own political party leaders who are defining it as per their convenience and comfort, badly hampering Nepal’s bilateral, diplomatic and economic relationships, Basnyat said.
“There is always something unique in Nepal’s relationship with India, China and the USA, be it the people-to-people or the government-to-government relations and behaviours,” he said.
He also blamed that the political parties are trying to project the USA as a bad country among the public by continuously dragging the MCC project into controversy. “In conclusion, I don’t see any link of the Indo Pacific Strategy (IPS) with MCC and its effect on Nepal’s national security,” Basnyat said.
