Kathmandu, May 25: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed the need for celebrating the Republic Day as a people’s festival and not just as a formality.
Addressing a meeting of the Republic Day Celebration Main Organising Committee at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Monday, Prime Minister Oli said that Democracy Day and Republic Day should be celebrated as people's festivals and the Constitution Day in a more special manner.
“We must not allow the sacrifices of the martyrs to be forgotten,” he said.
“The important changes the Republic Day brought about and the dignity it
established should be remembered and respected,” he added. “Let's organise interactions and seminars on the meaning and importance of the republic. Let’s have discussions.”
However, Prime Minister Oli was in favour of toning down the celebrations this year because of the pain and tragedy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stating that the republicanism did not mean anarchy, the Prime Minister stated that the rule and supremacy of law, equality and freedom were the distinguished features of the Constitution. He also stated that democracy would not be complete without republicanism.
Sharing that the government has felt the present pain of the people, Prime Minister Oli said that, while toned down, the Republic Day should be celebrated by reflecting nationality, singing the national anthem and holding interactions through electronic means.
He also stressed on the need for reaching out to the youths and children on this day.
