Kathmandu, Sept 20: President Bidya Devi Bhandari said on Friday that former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala had a tremendous role in the constitution making. She recalled the former Prime Minister as the leader of staid demeanour.
The President said this while conferring the Ganeshman Singh People's Movement Gold Medal on the late Koirala during a programme organized by the Ganeshman Singh and People's Movement Martyrs Peace Foundation today. She further said the consensus, cooperation and unity the late Koirala advocated for writing constitution is unforgettable.
According to her, the former Prime Minister Koirala had the capacity to take together all sides despite odd, which resulted in the promulgation of the present constitution.
On the occasion, former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba said Nepal's constitution based on pluralism was inclusive and exemplary in the world. He however accused the present government of working in an arbitrary manner in terms of constitution implementation. He further said the bills the present government forwarded on media council and human rights commission would curtail citizen's freedoms.
On the occasion, Nepal Communist Party leader Subash Chandra Nembang said the constitution was an amendable document. As the Nepali people are the source of the present constitution, their needs and aspiration should be considered while amending the constitution.
Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula viewed that the government was not implementing the constitution effectively. According to him, the government was ignoring the constitutional provision of having Speaker and Deputy Speaker from different political party.
Foundation Chairman and lawmaker Bhimsen Das Pradhan reminded that the late Prime Minister Sushil Koirala had incomparable role on Nepal's democratic movements and constitution making. Bearing this in mind, he was conferred on the Ganeshman Singh People's Movement Gold Medal posthumously, Pradhan added.
