Kathmandu, Jan. 9: With frequent development in the westerly wind in Nepal’s territory, the whole nation, including the Kathmandu Valley experienced a severe cold from Tuesday night while snowfall affected normal life in the high mountainous regions.
Weather in the Kathmandu Valley will improve only from Friday afternoon, according to Meteorologist Ganga Nagarkoti.
The whole region of Nepal became cloudy from Tuesday evening with western and mid-central regions becoming fully cloudy and eastern region partly cloudy, she said.
The phenomenon is gradually moving towards the east and it will take until Friday to completely overcome the present westerly disturbance, Nagarkoti said.
This was the third time that the Kathmandu Valley witnessed rainfall of this winter. The first winter rainfall in Kathmandu was recorded on December 14, 2019. The second winter rainfall was recorded on January 4 and 5.
During the first winter rainfall, Kathmandu received 33 mm rainfall, 6.7 mm on January 4 and 5 and as of 3:30 pm on January 8, Kathmandu received 2.3 mm rainfall.
According to her, mostly the western and central regions received light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning on Wednesday. “A brief rain is possible at a few places of the eastern region tonight,” she said.
Many places in the high mountainous region received light to moderate snowfall today, she said.
The Kathmandu Valley has also started witnessing a brief rains from Tuesday night, she said.
In the last 24 hours, Dadeldhura recorded 6.0 mm rainfall, 3.1 mm in Dipyal, 3.2 in Birendrangar, 2.2mm in Dang, 1.5 in Jumla and 1 mm in Bhairahawa.
Meanwhile, our district Correspondent Pushparaj Bhattarai said that police in Kalikot managed firewood for the locals to chase away the cold after heavy snowfall in the district. Kalikot has been witnessing heavy snowfall since last Friday.
Kalikot District Police Office has begun making fire in major parts of the district targeting the locals.
Minimum temperature of Kalikot dropped to minus three this week.
DSP Shyam Babu Oli said that children and old age citizens were mainly affected from the cold.
On Wednesday, police managed firewood and made fire at Pratima Chowk, Zero Point and Tadi Market.
